SARIKEI: Two SMK Tinggi Sarikei teams won junior category Asian Youth Innovation Awards 2019 during the Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) 2019 in Kuala Lumpur last month.

The Very Best Award went to Lau Chiew Hong, Peter Wong Qin Chai, Lau Ge Siong, Bartholomew Lau Sie Xiong, and Wong Ying Ying for their Bamboo Shoot Peeler.

“The device is meant to peel the hairy skin of bamboo shoots to prevent the fine hairs from sticking onto our skin, which could cause itchiness,” explained SMK Tinggi Sarikei principal Ting Sing Teck.

The peeler has a claw that is adjustable according to the angle of bamboo shoots.

Wong Soon Ping, Annie Lau Diew Feng, Lau Shyh Hung, Colin Ling Leh Ping, and Vincent Tang Jun Xiang received the Gold Award for their Flexy Sock Aider, which helps those with mobility limitations and elderly to put socks on easily without help.

“It brings recognition to the best inventions, innovations, designs and ideas of the year, which sees the participation of innovation and research community locally and abroad from 18 countries such as Croatia, Poland, the United States of America, Iran, Taiwan, and Saudi Arabia,” Ting said.

He added the school hopes to collaborate with institutions of higher learning to produce more innovations in future.

The students were mentored by teachers Leong Siew Choon and Joyce Lang Tee Khin.
